As shown in Figure 5-1, the default canvas image is full of background color that’s used to hide the image that’s printed on it. However, if you want to print your image and image manipulation projects, you need to work with the canvas image, so that you can view your image on a white background.

The default background color is white. However, the background color can be any other color, including black and shades of gray. You can also mix the background color with the foreground color by blending the two. I talk more about blending in the later section «Adding color to an image.»

Photoshop works best when it can use a transparent background. Therefore, unless you create a mask (explained in Chapter 12), you can never use an image that’s placed directly on a dark background.

You can save your image with a transparent background by saving it as a PNG file, which is a lossless format (more on that in Chapter 13). These files are smaller than JPEG files and often produce higher-quality images.
