3D AutoCAD 2000 onwards
Like other early CAD software, AutoCAD first introduced full 3D capabilities with AutoCAD 2000. In that version, 3D objects are treated like 2D shapes, though, at the time, the objects were split into a 2D and 3D layer. In 2007, AutoCAD was upgraded to a «3D Drafting and Design Suite», which included a 3D user interface. The 3D functions are now integrated into the 2D user interface.
The 3D ribbon was updated to have a single «3D» tab, which contains the tools and commands for all 3D operations. The ribbon interface was also changed so that it is now split between 2D and 3D operations.
The ribbon was updated again in 2014. In this version, the 3D section was also split into the following sections: 3D Modeling, 3D Text, 3D Tools, and 3D View. This design was abandoned in 2015, when the ribbon was changed to the current 2D ribbon.
Since 2010, AutoCAD also introduced a number of 3D tools which allowed customization and automation of the 3D experience. In 2014, the 3D Modeling and Text sections were replaced by the 3D Modeler and 3D Text tools. The most important of those tools was the 3D Navigation tool, which is integrated with the 3D user interface. It was also possible to use the 3D tools to create «smart components» that allow easy interaction with the other 2D and 3D tools and to make 3D layers that can be used in 2D drawing.
In 2013, AutoCAD was renamed from AutoCAD LT to AutoCAD, and in 2015, the «LT» prefix was dropped.
AutoCAD supports the following file formats:
DXF: 2D or 3D drawings.
DWG: 2D or 3D drawings.
DGN: 2D or 3D drawings, including a limited CADRM (product specification) information.
DWFB: Format for detailing and engineering data, including 3D drawings.

These file formats are supported natively, in addition to supporting their native formats.

4 The Setup Process
So what’s the point of all this fuss about preparing your drawing template in the process of creating a new sheet? To make sure your CAD sheet is set up for proper printability, you need to be aware of the following attributes:
- Layer reference points: Make sure each sheet has reference points. Using the Layers panel, find the line layer and make sure the line has reference points (the Layers panel will display the number of reference points, like +2). The sheet where you start must have reference points, as do subsequent sheets.
- Object style: The most noticeable difference between a printable and nonprintable sheet is the appearance of the layer names (see Figure 4.1). To change the appearance of the layer names, you need to change the Object Style. Choose Modify from the Options bar and choose the type of style you want from the Object Style menu. By default, the nonprintable style is selected.
- Font: Make sure the font on each layer matches that of your drawing. To change the font of the layers, make sure the font is the same on all the layers, and then choose Modify from the Options bar and select the font you want to use.
- Grids: Because drawing sheets contain grids, all sheets must have a page grid. A grid helps you to set up the drawing accurately on paper. To set a page grid, choose Object Options from the Options bar and then click Page Grid from the Grids panel. From there, you can select the size of the grid. When the page grid is set, the grid lines appear in the drawing file. (Figure 4.2).
